Virginia Tech moves up in AP women’s basketball poll

Virginia Tech rose one spot to No. 16 in the new Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll Monday.

The Hokies (18-4, 9-2 ACC) have won five straight games, including a home victory over Virginia last Thursday and a road win over then-No. 24 North Carolina on Sunday.

Tech center Elizabeth Kitley was named the ACC co-women’s basketball player of the week Monday. Kitley had 33 points, 15 baskets, 18 rebounds and three blocks in the win over UVa. She had 15 points and 15 rebounds in the win at UNC.

North Carolina dropped out of the new poll.

N.C. State (19-2, 7-2 entering Monday), which hosts the Hokies on Thursday, moved up two spots to No. 3. State hosted Louisville on Monday night.

Notre Dame (17-4, 7-3) moved up two spots to No. 12.

Louisville (19-3, 8-1 entering Monday) rose one spot to No. 15.

Syracuse (18-4, 8-3) fell two spots to No. 23.

South Carolina maintained a strong grip atop the poll, once again the unanimous No. 1 team from a 35-member national media panel.

The Gamecocks (21-0) will host Missouri and No. 11 UConn this week. Dawn Staley’s squad will play those games without star center Kamilla Cardoso, who left for a week to play with the Brazilian national team at an Olympic qualifying tournament.

Caitlin Clark and Iowa (21-2) climbed back to No. 2 in the poll.

UConn stays No. 1

Reigning national champion Connecticut, Purdue and North Carolina remained atop the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll for the third consecutive week, while South Carolina cracked the rankings for the first time in nearly seven years.

The Huskies (20-2) earned 45 of 61 first-place votes to remain at No. 1 for the fourth straight week, while the Boilermakers (21-2) topped the ballots of 16 other voters and remained No. 2. UNC (18-4) stayed at No. 3 after losing to Georgia Tech and beating Duke.

In the wake of Kansas beating Houston, the Jayhawks (18-4) moved up four spots to No. 4 and dropped the Cougars (19-3) one spot to No. 5.

Duke, which won at Virginia Tech last week before losing at UNC, fell two spots to ninth.

No. 15 South Carolina (19-3) is making its first appearance in the poll since February 2017, a season that saw the Gamecocks make a surprise run to the Final Four. Lamont Paris’ squad has won five straight games, and its 19 wins already surpassed its season haul for any year since that run. South Carolina beat Virginia Tech in November.
