Facebook and Instagram give creators more ways to make money

Meta today announced Facebook and Instagram are giving creators more ways to make money on their platforms. Meta is testing a new holiday bonus that rewards creators for reels plays and photo views on Instagram. The bonus is currently invite-only and will be available to creators in the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

Facebook and Instagram are also making it easier for creators to gain new subscribers. On Instagram, the Subscribe button will now be surfaced more prominently on creators’ content in Feed. On Facebook, creators will have more ways to subscribe via Reels and Stories, and they will have more control over their subscription pricing.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is currently waiving subscription fees for creators using this product on both Instagram and Facebook. The company will provide a six-month notice to creators before it changes this approach.

In addition to subscriptions, Facebook and Instagram are also expanding access to gifts to creators in more countries. Gifts are a way for fans to show their appreciation for creators’ content by sending them virtual gifts purchased with Stars.

Finally, Facebook and Instagram are making it easier for creators to participate in ads. The company is showing additional ad eligibility information when creators are creating Instagram Stories. This will help creators to avoid ad eligibility errors and make it easier for them to work with brand partners on Branded Content and Partnership Ads.

YouTube is the most profitable platform for content creators

Creators can make money on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, but YouTube is generally considered to be the most profitable. This is because YouTube has a more mature monetization ecosystem, with a wider range of monetization options available to creators, including:

  • Ad revenue: Creators can earn money from ads that are shown before, during, and after their videos.
  • Channel memberships: Creators can offer exclusive content and perks to viewers who subscribe to their channel.
  • Super Chat and Super Stickers: Viewers can pay to have their messages highlighted in the chat during live streams.
  • Merchandise: Creators can sell their own merchandise through the YouTube Store.

Instagram and TikTok also offer a variety of monetization options, but they are not as well-developed as YouTube’s monetization ecosystem. For example, Instagram creators can earn money from branded content deals, affiliate marketing, and in-app purchases. TikTok creators can earn money from brand deals, the TikTok Creator Fund, and virtual gifts.

According to a 2023 study by influencer marketing platform Aspire, YouTube is the most profitable platform for creators, with 30% of creators saying that it is their top source of income. TikTok is the second most profitable platform, with 25.8% of creators saying that it is their top source of income. Instagram is the third most profitable platform, with 7.1% of creators saying that it is their top source of income.

However, it is important to note that the amount of money that creators make on each platform can vary widely depending on a number of factors, such as the creator’s niche, audience size, and engagement rate. For example, a popular YouTuber with millions of subscribers can make a significant amount of money from ad revenue, while a TikTok creator with a smaller audience may need to rely on other monetization methods, such as brand deals or virtual gifts.

Overall, YouTube is the most profitable platform for creators, but Instagram and TikTok can also be lucrative platforms for creators who are able to build a strong following and create high-quality content.
